'A Collective Anxiety Attack': Investigating the Mental Impact of Unexplained Drone Sightings Across Europe

The troubling question preoccupying many who have witnessed them above is: why?

A local resident was quite certain about what appeared before him when a mysterious scarlet illumination appeared between his house and garage on Norway's coastal region one cold Friday night in late September.

The father-of-three, a fisheries worker and firefighter, had recently transported his young son home from football practice when they came to an abrupt halt by an object overhead in Norway's transparent atmosphere.

"In the space separating the structures I spot a mysterious glow that is not normally there. We both see straight away it's a drone," he stated. "We remain stationary briefly and watch and we observe the scarlet beacons. I was able to discern it was a very big drone. Maybe 1.5 metres wide."

As a regular drone user, he was well aware of the regulations near his residence close to a local airfield, an important facility for Nato and the country's military aviation.

Growing Concerns

It was rare to witness a flying device flying at night. However, only when the following day, when he discovered reports about the aerial intrusions at airfields in Norway, that he began considering about it.

The young boys were worried. He sought to provide context. "At present, we are removed from the conflict that's occurring but I think we're being observed and attempting to gauge how we behave to aerial devices," he commented.

The witness states he doesn't feel frightened yet, but the incidents have already generated some psychological effect on Norwegians. He thinks the developments in the European continent could escalate fast. "With increasing sightings the unmanned aircraft, more people are asking what's taking place. They're interested."

Widespread Incidents

After three drones were shot down in Polish airspace in recent weeks, observations of unmanned aerial vehicles have spread across Europe, encompassing events that have halted operations at significant aviation facilities.

The Danish prime minister spoke to the country following the shutdown of the main Danish aviation facility. "We are at the beginning of an unconventional conflict against Europe," she said.

An incursion over the German airfield in the past week required flight regulators to suspend operations, resulting in the scrapping of numerous aircraft movements and interrupting transportation for nearly 3,000 passengers.

Past Precedents

The violations in Northern Europe display significant historical parallels, commented a senior lecturer in the department of psychological medicine.

"As the expression goes that historical events don't duplicate, but it rhymes – and what we're now observing over Scandinavia is historical patterns repeating," he said. "Historical records show of unidentified object concerns over these areas where the source was thought to originate from either the eastern neighbor or the historical superpower."

In the nineteen-thirties it was "mysterious flying machines" that caused panic, thought to be hostile Soviet aircraft on surveillance operations as a prelude to a military attack.

"Many of these reports match known astronomical objects like the planet Venus appearing," explained the researcher. "No aircraft of the time could have continued flying for the timeframes that witnesses reported. Advancing to 1946 and northern European countries were showing concern regarding numerous reports of 'phantom missiles'."

Psychological Impact

Additionally, there exists an emotional consequence that is not fully recognized, stated a research lead studying drone technology and culture.

"I believe the incursions are a method to frighten and to provoke," she noted. "So drones kind of operate in this undefined space where they demonstrate their existence, their abilities, they indicate that there are weaknesses, but they don't kind of yet tip into that full-scale aggression that we're seeing in Ukraine and Russia."

A different researcher participating in the project stated that since humans employed aviation in combat, an important result was to "transform calm airspace into an ongoing security concern."

Current Situation

The drone sightings of 2025 cannot be said psychological projections but they were being experienced amid an ideal combination of global pressures driven by Russian aggression and anxieties over the uncertainty of longtime Nato ally the United States.

"Unexpectedly, various European states like Denmark are experiencing increased insecurity than they have in recent memory," he said.

"Within this atmosphere, what we're observing is a widespread fear response where the atmosphere has become a cultural measure of the current era, fueled by imperfections in visual interpretation and concern."

With seasonal changes and the days are getting shorter, which indicates increased nighttime which must be considered as it adds to the unclear nature of these events.

"It's unlikely beneficial for individuals suffering from anxiety," noted the researcher.
