Courageous Rail Staff Member Endures Severe Wounds Amid Multiple Knife Attack on Express Service

A valiant train staff member who stepped in to save passengers during a mass knife incident on a express train has suffered critical injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Event

Surveillance video reportedly shows the staff member attempting to stop the attacker as the train traveled between a city and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a terrifying 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for interrogation. Authorities declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Crisis Reaction and Consequences

The event on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have since been released from hospital.

A bystander recorded the individual waving a big knife and being shot with a stun device as he confronted police on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."

“This terrible incident has affected many people. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous member of train personnel whose family are being supported by trained personnel,” stated a high-ranking law enforcement officer.

Labor Response and Appeals for Measures

Train associations were quick to praise staff and call for more action. One union official said he would be “seeking immediate meetings with government, train companies and law enforcement to guarantee that we have the strongest possible assistance, tools and robust procedures in operation”.

Another union representative encouraged the train operator and authorities “to move swiftly to examine safety, to help the impacted workers, and to make sure nothing like this happens again”.

Driver Praised for Rapid Thinking

The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been commended by union representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“The driver did not halt the service in the middle of two stops where it’s obviously difficult for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” stated a association official.

Additional Information

Police said they got the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness described at first thinking if the event was a Halloween joke, but quickly understood from people's faces that it was real.

Police have confirmed there is no evidence to suggest the event was a terrorist attack and have requested the public to come forward with any further information.

Rail operations on the impacted line are anticipated to have disruption until the following day, with passengers recommended to defer their travel where possible.

Anyone with details that could assist the investigation are encouraged to reach police by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
