Game Coverage
21st Minute: Intense Play while Both Teams Battle
21st minute: Brisbane advance to halfway and almost pierce the opposition defense through Reece Walsh and Gehamat Shibasaki on the left flank. Another excellent delivery from Adam Reynolds on the last tackle keeps Brisbane's momentum. For three tackles they remain on the front foot, but some quick passes release the rapid Jahrome Hughes, and when he's brought down on the 40-meter line, a six-again is given for holding down. The Storm are now in rhythm, and William Warbrick breaks through the line, followed by Xavier Coates making a sprint – only for Walsh to make high contact with a shoulder charge! Could that be a yellow card? Not according to the referee, rules Grant Atkins, because the winger was buckling. Walsh is placed on report nonetheless, and the Storm resume their attack.
19th Minute: Cameron Munster Directs Melbourne Offense
19 mins: Munster is active as Melbourne move quickly down to their 30-meter line. On the right side, Jahrome Hughes lofts a kick, Eliesa Katoa rushes up, but in the marking contest, the forward knocks on, and Brisbane finally get a breather.
18 mins: Storm Exert Pressure on Brisbane
18th minute: The Storm perform a textbook restart set and apply plenty of force on Mariner with the final kick. Once more, the Broncos struggle to advance near halfway in response, and Adam Reynolds is forced to boot it deep to keep his team in touch.
17th Minute: Setback for Storm
17th minute: It’s not all good news for the Storm. Howarth has been subbed out due to a groin injury. Wishart is on in his position.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Storm 12-6 Broncos (Eliesa Katoa, 15)
Brilliant, absolutely stunning. After consecutive set restarts, the Broncos are tiring. From tackle three near the try line on the left, the Storm send the ball infield for two passes before Jahrome Hughes drops the ball onto his toe and the onrushing Eliesa Katoa times his run to perfection to dive on the loose ball and stand to celebrate his side's second touchdown!
From just to the right of the posts, Meaney converts his second conversion.
12 mins: Melbourne Display Exciting Offense
12th minute: Melbourne appear thrilling in offense. They have pace from the play-the-ball, grunt from the forwards, and crisp hands from the outside players. A dangerous attack concludes with a high kick to the left corner that is dropped by Walsh and leads to a infringement to the Melbourne for an escort on Xavier Coates. The Storm decline the penalty goal and get to work near the goalposts. There’s a six again – and a further one – as Cameron Munster weaves side to side.
10 mins: Tense Play
10 mins: Stefano Utoikamanu has delivered as promised early and his carry from the restart allows Harry Grant, then Papenhuyzen, to dart from dummy-half. Jahrome Hughes boots from 40m and Walsh secures the bomb on his 10m line. Brisbane show less penetration in this set and get fortunate on the last when Ben Hunt's pass to Adam Reynolds goes to ground. Fortunately, the veteran halfback delivers a great kick to force Xavier Coates to retreat and makes the Melbourne wing to sprint from his in-goal. The Brisbane are too eager with their chase, hitting the Queenslander with a high tackle, and Melbourne can gain favorable territory.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Melbourne 6-6 Brisbane (Meaney, 8)
From the scrum, Stefano Utoikamanu powers forward to the 20m line. Next, from fast play off the back, all of Melbourne’s big names handle the ball as they catch and pass out to the right hand side until Nick Meaney straightens up, runs at an angle at high speed, and breaks through a weak tackle line to dive over for an immediate response!
Meaney dusts himself down to kick the goal. We have a shootout!
7th Minute: Teams Trade Possession
7 mins: The two teams exchange conservative sets either side of midfield, but then the Brisbane attempt to attack on their left, only to fail to hit Shibasaki with the pass. William Warbrick rushes up and earns a dropped ball for his efforts.
5th Minute: Dream Start for Brisbane
5th minute: That is the perfect beginning for Brisbane, scoring first before the Storm have even touched the ball, in an offensive play dominated by both Payne Haas and Walsh. The Storm might feel a little aggrieved at Grant Atkins awarding such an early penalty, but they were clearly breached by the rapid Brisbane offense.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Storm 0-6 Broncos (Mariner, 3)
After kicking downfield, Brisbane get to work. Melbourne give away a set restart for being offside, and quickly the ball is in the danger area. Reece Walsh positions himself? Waiting on the right edge, drawing in Jack Howarth, standing his ground, then someway offloading to Mariner on his wing. The winger cuts infield, reaches the line, then barely stays in the playing area as he moves to score under the posts.
There’s a delay before Adam Reynolds kicks the goal, but the Bunker confirms the on-field decision. The venue is rocking to the sound of ecstatic Queenslanders.
2nd Minute: Early Penalty
2 mins: Corey Jensen, not Payne Haas, takes the first hit-up of the match and the Storm are up sharply… but only a few plays later the Storm concede the opening infringement of the game for Harry Grant impeding Haas on the floor. The Broncos immediately on the attack.
