The French leader has requested Sébastien Lecornu to return as head of government a mere four days after he resigned, sparking a week of political upheaval and political turmoil.

The president stated late on Friday, hours after meeting key political groups together at the official residence, except for the figures of the far right and far left.

His reappointment shocked many, as he declared on television recently that he was not “chasing the job” and his role had concluded.

Doubts remain whether he will be able to assemble a cabinet, but he will have to start immediately. The new prime minister faces a deadline on the start of the week to submit financial plans before lawmakers.

Governing Obstacles and Economic Pressures

Officials said the president had assigned him to build a cabinet, and his advisors implied he had been given complete freedom to proceed.

The prime minister, who is one of the president's key supporters, then published a comprehensive announcement on social media in which he consented to responsibly the assignment entrusted to me by the president, to strive to finalize financial plans by the end of the year and address the common issues of our countrymen.

Political divisions over how to bring down the country's public debt and cut the budget deficit have led to the resignation of two of the past three prime ministers in the recent period, so his challenge is immense.

Government liabilities in the past months was nearly 114 percent of gross domestic product – the third highest in the euro area – and this year's budget deficit is projected to hit 5.4 percent of economic output.

Lecornu stated that everyone must contribute the need of fixing the nation's budget. With only 18 months before the conclusion of his term, he advised that those in the cabinet would have to set aside their aspirations for higher office.

Leading Without Support

Compounding the challenge for Lecornu is that he will face a show of support in a parliament where Macron has lacks sufficient support to back him. His public standing reached its lowest point in the latest survey, according to research that put his support level on 14 percent.

Jordan Bardella of the National Rally party, which was left out of consultations with faction heads on Friday, remarked that the prime minister's return, by a president “more than ever isolated and disconnected” at the presidential palace, is a “bad joke”.

They would immediately bring a challenge against a doomed coalition, whose sole purpose was dreading polls, the leader stated.

Seeking Support

The prime minister at least knows the pitfalls in his path as he tries to establish a cabinet, because he has already used time this week talking to political groups that might support him.

Alone, the moderate factions are insufficient, and there are divisions within the conservative Republicans who have helped prop up the administration since he lacked support in elections last year.

So he will consider socialist factions for potential support.

In an attempt to court the left, the president's advisors suggested the president was evaluating a pause to part of his divisive social security adjustments passed in 2023 which raised the retirement age from 62 up to 64.

The offer was inadequate of what socialist figures wanted, as they were expecting he would appoint a prime minister from their camp. The Socialist leader of the Socialists commented “since we've not been given any guarantees, we won't give any guarantee” in a vote of confidence.

The Communist figure from the Communists said after meeting the president that the left wanted real change, and a leader from the moderate faction would not be accepted by the public.

Greens leader Marine Tondelier said she was “stunned” Macron had given minimal offers to the progressives, adding that the situation would deteriorate.
