Previous FBI chief James Comey has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a legislative process.

His lawyer entered the plea representing him in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the legal matter dismissed for several causes including that his client, a detractor of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was charged just days after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative advised the judge they intended to present various motions to terminate the proceedings before a trial, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully assigned to handle the proceedings.

Mr Comey's case was first managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under pressure from Donald Trump after his investigation into a different opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was supported by his wife, Mrs Failor and child Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration terminated.

Following the reading to the judge state his legal protections and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he understood the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the judge.

Previous Events

James Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was fired about a few months into Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the moment, he was directing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Russia and the election effort.

While in office, the director caused a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he stated just days before the national vote that he was probing Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Clinton were not filed, leading to negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys allege Mr Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the legislative body by saying he had not approved a person at the agency to disclose to news outlets information about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also accuse Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, hinder and slow" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media the former director published to his Instagram after he was accused, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of behaving like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for a long time that there are costs to standing up to Mr Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "So let's have a trial."

The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump shared on digital channels demanding his attorney general, Pam Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and other people.
