United Nations Ends Restrictions on President of Syria Ahead of White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

The UN Security Council gave the green light to an American proposal ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his White House visit the following week.

He was appointed interim leader after leading a rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, ending thirteen long years of domestic strife.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" after Assad's removal.

He had been subject to UN sanctions while commanding the Muslim faction the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. The US removed the group from its registry of global extremist entities this past July.

More Penalties Removed

The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of the penalties, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and supportive states for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week occurs subsequent to President Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

The pair met on their first occasion in May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to the region.

After that meeting, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country before he cut connections in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit does not represent the president's debut journey to the US in the current year. This past fall, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the United Nations gathering in New York after approximately sixty years.

Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
